The extraordinary true story of a group of convicts transported to Australia as a punishment for their crimes.

Survival is by no means certain in this strange, unfamiliar world, yet an officer inspires them to rehearse and perform a play. Facing opposition, supply shortages, abuse and the threat of hangings, the odds are seemingly stacked against them.

Features the creative use of audio description, captioning and British Sign Language interpretation.

“Entertaining, inclusive, and generous staging of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s hymn to the humanising power of theatre.”

Natasha Tripney (The Stage, Time Out)

“Acquires fresh force when it’s delivered in voices that are infrequently heard... Illuminating, sensitive and current.”

Sam Marlowe (The Times, The Stage, Time Out, Arts Desk)

“Canny... Sharpened by disability... Signed throughout, language floats to the fore... Sinks too far into sentiment.”

Matt Trueman (What's On Stage, Time Out)

“Aesthetics and accessibility combine brilliantly... Works a slow transforming magic, and there are some lovely performances.”

Lyn Gardner (The Guardian)

“Breathes fresh life into it... What you notice here is how concerned the play also is with language and communication.”

Holly Williams (What's On Stage, Time Out, Independent)
