Following their triumphant productions of The Tempest (2011) and Macbeth (2010) at the Barbican, Donnellan and Ormerod turn their attention to Jacobean tragedy with a new production of John Ford’s ‘Tis Pity She's a Whore.

In this violent and bloody drama, we watch a brother and sister’s passionate descent into hell. Incest, morality, religion and corruption all make this play as shocking and controversial today as it was almost four hundred years ago.

Full of incest, treachery, and blood, this is not for the squeamish, but shows a company at the top of their game. Magnificent acting from the entire cast kept the audience rapt for two hours - even though the play is from 1626, they took the characters seriously, with thoughtful choices and no role played in 2D. Some reviewers who know the play well have chafed at this version, but mostly, kudos.
