The 19th-century Spanish cigarette factory of Carmen becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger.

Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

A wealth of cinematic references contribute to a dangerous and uncompromising vision of small-town America.

The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertory. Matthew Bourne’s internationally acclaimed dance thriller was first seen in 2000, when it won the Evening Standard Award for ‘Musical Event of the Year’.

“Noirish tale of sex and betrayal... hurtles towards its denouement with unimprovably entertaining velocity... See it. ”

Time Out (Other reviewers)

“His current company... is superb and deals with his angular, almost brutal dance language... with enthusiasm and clarity. ”

Other newspaper reviewers

“Matthew Bourne's radical reworking of Carmen still makes for a thrilling evening of dance. ”

Other newspaper reviewers

“A supremely and inventively slick entertainment, at its best it also drills down to a hard core of emotional truth. ”

Other newspaper reviewers

“Bristling with references to movies and plays this is one of Bourne's most mature works... Slick, sexy and very bloody. ”
