Out of the darkness, Ulysses returns from twenty years of wandering and war, hoping to be reunited with his wife Penelope.
Can he reach her before she succumbs to one of her suitors?

Forming the narrative basis of this new work, Monteverdi’s opera The Return of Ulysses is layered over themes from Primo Levi’s book The Truce – a testimony of a Second World War refugee.

Driven by a score melding Monteverdi, traditional folk songs and original composition, Il Ritorno sees singers and musicians join the company’s artists whose expressive, dynamic, integrated acrobatics push their bodies to the extreme.

Live opera fuses with the thrilling physicality of contemporary circus in a potent production that draws on history and mythology to tell a timeless tale of exile, displacement and longing for home.

Sung in Italian and Yiddish

Part of London International Mime Festival 2016

“Devastating... Reverberates with real emotional pungency, as if the essence of homesickness has been bottled. ”

Lyn Gardner (The Guardian)

“An almost sublime union of circus and music, frustratingly let down by some poorly integrated pieces. ”

Tom Wicker (Time Out, The Stage, Telegraph)

“Soulful contemporary circus... The performers are all incredibly skilled... it’s pretty remarkable. ”
