A nation in uproar. A leader in crisis. An unlikely successor waiting in the wings.

Richard II is a gripping political thriller about the seduction of power and the tragedy of losing it. On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, following a premiere in the House of Commons, this bold new production brings his drama to 21st century Westminster.

(There will be one show at the Houses of Parliament on 23 April, with tickets distributed by ballot). Reviews are of this performance.

“Doesn’t fully capture the play’s introspective poeticism... Clear, pacy and rich in sharply delineated performances. ”

Claire Allfree (Metro, Telegraph)

“Moderately successful updating... A cleanly focused but reduced account of the most ritualistic of the history plays. ”

The Stage (Other reviewers)

“Gulliford’s fantastic... A lucid production in which the action is easy to follow even if the psychology is bewildering. ”

Andrzej Lukowski (Time Out)

“Making the king into a PM might ram home the issues of power and sovereignty, but it confuses the issue and dilutes the drama. ”

Dominic Maxwell (The Times)
