When Gwendolen and Cecily wander in from The Importance of Being Earnest Henry’s mind wanders too. He knows he was Algernon in a production in Zurich. But who was the other one?

Stoppard’s dazzling comedy of art, love and revolution features James Joyce, Tristan Tzara and Lenin as remembered - and misremembered - by Henry Carr, a minor British diplomat in Zurich 1917. The original production won the Evening Standard award for Best Comedy and the Tony award for Best Play.

Transfers with full cast from the Menier Chocolate Factory.  (Reviews from 2016)

“Like vintage champagne, rich and effervescent at first sip, with a mellow, lingering aftertaste of deeper tones. ”

Sarah Crompton (What's On Stage, Guardian)

“Fleet, funny and hooks you in even as you pant to keep up... Hollander plays Carr to the comic hilt. ”

Dominic Cavendish (The Telegraph)

“A cracker... Zany, breathless, full of intricate literary puns... Marber, assisted by a spry cast, really makes it work. ”

Quentin Letts (Daily Mail)

“Scintillating... A top-notch cast... Teeming with playful ideas, audacious pastiche, triple takes... Hollander is sensational. ”

Kate Kellaway (Observer)

“Hollander delivers one of the funniest and most nuanced performances of his career and heads a cast that is virtually flawless. ”

Neil Norman (Express, The Stage)

“The credit of Marber’s production rests on the dishevelled, reminiscing, indignant Hollander. What a star!”

Libby Purves (TheatreCat, Times)

“Joyously responsive to Stoppard’s theatricality... Well-meshed cast. They’re all in total command of the scintillating text.”

Arts Desk (other reviewers)

“Directed by Marber with a finely tuned sense of its elegance and intelligence, it sparkles... Hollander is a delight. ”

Henry Hitchings (Evening Standard)

“A glorious intellectual spritzer... A magnificent, defining, wittily commanding and endearing performance from Hollander. ”

Libby Purves (TheatreCat, Times)

“Utterly scintillating revival... the first-rate cast perform the intellectual vaudeville with terrific pace, zest and dexterity.”

Paul Taylor (The Independent)

“Stoppard really was on fire, and this revival sparkles with his wit, theatrical verve and marvellous sense of mischief. ”

Aleks Sierz (Arts Desk, The Stage)

“Aggressively witty... At the centre of Marber’s precise, energetic revival, Hollander is superb... Head-spinningly fun. ”

Andrzej Lukowski (Time Out)

“Hollander brings his own brand of spry mischief... Stoppard’s play has lost none of its champagne fizz and buoyant energy. ”

Michael Billington (The Guardian)

“An effervescent delight... a performance to cherish from a never-been-better Hollander. Joyous wordplay... Consistently comic.”

Fiona Mountford (Evening Standard)

“Stoppard has maximum fun with us, history and theatre, something that Marber taps directly into with his revival... Bonkers.”

Daisy Bowie-Sell (What's On Stage, Time Out, Telegraph)

“You don’t need a degree in English, art or Russian history to get you through this brilliantly frivolous production... Dazzling.”

Patrick Marmion (Time Out, Daily Mail)

“Effervescent, intellectually brilliant... Momentous questions are posed in a piece that appears as light as tissue paper.”

Sarah Hemming (Financial Times)

“Henry Carr – brilliantly performed by Hollander in Marber’s very funny and highly-strung production... Intensely entertaining.”

Time Out (Other reviewers)

“Hollander is wonderful as Carr: potty, vain and suddenly flushed with despair.. Fox takes his acting into a heady new dimension.”

Susannah Clapp (The Observer)

“Stoppard's dense comedy is given a playfully amusing, occasionally bemusing outing. ”

Mark Shenton (The Stage, Express)
