A king is forced to choose between love and political expediency. His decisions allow his country to slide into civil war, and turn his wife and son against him.

Inspired by Elizabethan drama, Benjamin’s third opera, his latest collaboration with playwright Crimp, considers what space, if any, exists for love and human affection inside the dangerous machinery of power.

Sung in English with surtitles.

“Benjamin’s new work on the subject of Edward II once again shows his operatic mastery.”

The Stage (Other reviewers)

“A dreamlike feel, sucking the audience into this king’s life-ruining romantic obsession... Delicate, forboding score.”

Alice Saville (Time Out, Independent)

“Unremittingly bleak demonstration of the corrosive consequences of love and obsession.”

Other newspaper reviewers

“Intrigues and compels. Charged with music of exquisite beauty and a potent narrative, it is immaculately staged and performed.”

Other newspaper reviewers

“Tracing a remorseless arc of cruelty and abuse to paint a bleakly depressing view of the world.”

Other newspaper reviewers

“Gripping... enough to make an audience hold its breath for long stretches at a time. In Mitchell’s razor-sharp production.”

Other newspaper reviewers

“A cerebral tale, largely interior in its mood despite the excessive verbiage of Crimp's libretto.”

Mark Valencia (What's On Stage)

“Brands itself on mind and ear if not, perhaps, on your heart,”

Arts Desk (other reviewers)

“Brings a contemporary twist to the historical downfall and murder of King Edward II... Fine performances all round.”

Clare Colvin (Express)

“Crimp’s libretto overlays everything with a quasi-poetic veneer which militates against any kind of narrative clarity.”

Other newspaper reviewers

“For all the gorgeousness of sound... very seductive on the ear... remains frustratingly glacial.”

Other newspaper reviewers

“Little of its predecessor’s riveting drama.”
