Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder…

A student is called home from university to find his life turned upside down. He had the world at his feet, but now everything has changed. Who can be trusted, who can be believed?

Sent by the ghost of his father to avenge his brutal death, Hamlet’s mission to expose the truth is a perilous journey of madness, murder and lost love. What will ultimately become of a young man sent to kill?

The RSC brings Shakespeare’s searing tragedy to London as part of a national tour. Essiedu reprises his highly praised lead performance, which won Best Performance in a Play at the UK Theatre Awards in 2016.

“Vibrant... Essiedu: in thrillingly unforced command of the role, radiating impudent charisma, energy and wounded idealism.”

“Godwin’s sultry and at times risky interpretation... An accessible, absorbing take on Shakespeare’s tragedy.”

Henry Hitchings (Evening Standard)

“Essiedu: charismatic, capricious and compelling: an impulsive, arresting presence... Fresh, fleet-footed, intelligent.”

Sarah Hemming (Financial Times)

“A bright, expansive take... Hamlet is less troubled philosopher, more a wise-cracking rebel with a can of spray paint.”

Alice Saville (Time Out, Independent)

“Acute, alert production... Essiedu: a natural gift for empathy and feeling... Banksy-esque designs.”

Matt Wolf (Arts Desk)

“With his lucid, intelligent handling of the verse and his baby-faced vulnerability, he makes the part his own... Essiedu shines.”

Dominic Cavendish (The Telegraph)

“A novel interpretation – one that makes Hamlet an unruly, firecracker presence... Essiedu gives us Hamlet as God's gift.”

Matt Trueman (What's On Stage, Time Out)
